It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN the time comes that you will be called upon to perform some level of medical intervention in the line of duty. Who will it be for? A fellow officer? Innocent bystander? Perpetrator? Possibly even yourself? Do you have the basic knowledge, skills or equipment to perform lifesaving procedures during the worst case scenario? As the saying goes "in time of crisis, expect not to rise to the occasion, rather fall back to the level of your training." Even if you have had previous medical training will you remember it in a life threatening situation? Can you take care of yourself or fellow officer until medical care professionals can safely reach you? If the answer is no, then you need to attend this 8-hour intensive course that focuses on BASIC LIFE-SAVING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. This class will teach you what you need to know and will provide you with the tools needed to save your life or the life of someone else until EMS can get on scene. This class is designed for anyone in Law Enforcement from patrol to SWAT, as well as for medical professionals who operate in the tactical environment. The course of instruction will be a comprehensive 8 hour Self Aid-Buddy Aid (SABA) course for those wishing to expand their knowledge in the BASICS of Life-Saving Medical Intervention. It is important for us to stress that those of us in law enforcement agree that sometimes the best medical care on the battlefield is locating, isolating and then eliminating the threat. Sometimes the best bandage you can carry is accurate return fire. This class will not place medical skills/procedures over the priority of taking out an active threat. This course will consist of lecture, practical exercises and scenario based training that is effective and realistic. This class will be taught at the Round Rock Police Station in Round Rock, Texas Training site located at: 2701 N. Mays St Round Rock TX 78665 Class will start promptly at 0800 Hrs. on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010. Instructors: John Dunn: Austin/Travis-County EMS Tactical Paramedic John Dunn serves in support of Austin Police Department SWAT. A Paramedic since 1995, John has served in the Ranger Regiment and deployed to Iraq as a National Guardsman. He is a former wilderness/river guide with an interest in remote and austere care. He also contract teaches Combat Life Saver/Tactical Combat Casualty Care to DoD personnel. Deputy Brian Lankford: NREMT-P is assigned to the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office Tactical Operations Unit as a SWAT Operator/Tactical Paramedic. Deputy Lankford is one of the instructor cadre for the TTPOA's Tactical Medic Training Program developed in 2004. | Course Topics: |
This course follows the Brand New 2009 fully updated guidelines put forth by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). TCCC is the standard of care for life saving medical techniques in the tactical environment. TCCC is the golden standard of care utilized by all US Military Special Forces Medics and medically trained soldiers. The information contained in this course has been heavily studied, evaluated and when necessary changed to meet the urgent need of evolving medical care. The information and skill sets contained within this course have been proven to save lives time and time again in Iraq and Afghanistan since the conflict began in 2001. The focus of this class is to give each student the ability to recognize, evaluate and control life threatening bleeding at the point of wounding, thus by increasing the victim's chance of survival dramatically. The "Downed Operator Kits" (D.O.K.) that will be issued to each student contains the necessary equipment to provide these life saving skills on themselves or someone else. Just some of the equipment included in these kits are a tourniquet, pressure dressings and even the latest TCCC recommended hemostatic embedded bandages. Each attendee will be trained on how to effectively use each item in their D.O.K. This D.O.K. can be utilized in addition to any pre-existing medical equipment or become their primary Medical Kit. These D.O.K.'s are designed to be easily added to Tactical Operations Gear or fit in a patrol vehicle. The course will cover the following: - Identify the importance of every Law Enforcement Officer having Basic Medical Knowledge/Skills Set.
- Define Self-Aid, Buddy-Aid, and Civilian Medic Aid.
- Developing a better Medical Equipment "Toolbox".
- Define Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and the 3-basic phases of TCCC.
- Perform a rapid/basic patient assessment and perform medical interventions during Self-Aid/Buddy-Aid.
- Demonstrate Skills proficiency on tourniquet application, application of hemostatic bandages, pressure bandages, managing the airway of a casualty, chest seals and placing victims in the recovery position.
- Demonstrate Casualty Extraction Techniques utilizing a variety of equipment and manual carries.
