Designated Marksman

This course will teach you to stretch out your patrol carbine to ranges beyond 50 yards. It is not intended to be a sniper school, we focus on rapid hits out to 200 yards using Vari-X optics, magnifiers behind your current RDS, or low power fixed magnification optics. All ranging will be estimated and hold overs will be calculated using knowledge gained in the class based on your weapon and ammunition. This is a great class for patrol officers or SWAT members assigned to perimeter duties. The class is open to rifles in calibers 5.56/.308 and any barrel length. Bolt guns will struggle in portions of the course, so a semi-auto gun is recommended.

Student performance objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Law & policy

  • Equipment and weapon selection

  • Discrimination in low or failing light

  • External Ballistics

  • Use of BDC reticles

  • Transition from long to short ranges

  • Close engagements with the DM rifle

Officers attending should already be qualified with a patrol rifle at their home agency.
