Instructor Bio:  

              Officer Barber has been a police officer with the Houston Police Department for 14 years.  Officer Barber was a member of the part-time SWAT Detail for 5 years before being assigned full-time to the SWAT Detail for the last 5 years.  Officer Barber is the master breacher for the HPD SWAT Detail and has conducted a multitude of operational and training explosive breaches during his career.

 

              Officer Miller has been a police officer with the Houston Police Department for 33 years. Officer Miller has been assigned to the bomb squad for 10 years and the FBI Stabilization team for the last 7 years.  Officer Miller has 10 years breaching experience with classes by REST, TEES, and Cherry Engineering

 

Course Description:

              This course is designed to provide the knowledge and experience necessary to develop an operational explosive breaching program or augment an established explosive breaching program.  Students will be introduced to multiple types of charge configurations and deployment methodologies designed to allow the tactical explosive breacher to work safely and effectively in high stress and high liability environments.  All explosive breaches performed will be in real, offsite locations offering students the ability to validate target analysis, standoff calculations, blast pressure mitigation procedures, and charge effectiveness within interior floor plans with multiple reflective surfaces.

Tentative schedule will include:

              Day 1 – Classroom

·       Program Design

·       Basics of Chemical Explosives

·       Applications of Explosive Breaching

·       Explosive Breaching Calculations

·       Charge Construction

·       Administrative Responsibilities

              Day 2 – Offsite location

·       Door Breaching

              Day 3 – Offsite location

·       Door Breaching (Advanced)

              Day 4 – Offsite location

·       Hard and Soft Wall Breaching                  

              Day 5 – Offsite location

·       Final Exam

·       Rapid Deployment Charges

Student Prerequisites:

·       All students must be active law enforcement or military

·       All students must currently hold a position in their unit where they may be required to perform, supervise, or operate in the vicinity of explosive breaching

 

Student Equipment Needs:

              Mandatory equipment includes:

Ballistic armor

Ballistic helmet

Eye/Ear protection

Long sleeve shirt and pants

Flashlight

Pen and paper

Rifle and pistol (no ammo needed)

 

Students may wish to bring a dust mask.

 

****Students be prepared to travel around the Houston area different venues******
