The TTPOA in partnership with the El Paso Police Department are proud to be hosting a 5 day (50hr) Basic Precision Marksman (Basic Sniper) Course in El Paso TX April 29 - May 3, 2019. The primary instructor will be Sergeant Rudy Gallegos who has been with the El Paso PD SWAT team for 18 years and has 14 years experience as a marksman/observer. Instructor cadre will also be comprised of EPPD SWAT marksmen element personnel.

Course Topics:

Legal issues, fundamentals of marksmanship, bullet trajectory, terminal ballistics, environmental factors, proper windage/slope, shot placement, use of scope/optics ( day & night), equipment selection, record keeping, ranging, camouflaging/urban hides, and sniper selection will be covered. Range instruction and drills will include; range estimation, cold-bore shots, fixed and moving target engagement at various distances up to 500 yards, shooting through glass/barriers, stress shooting, low light shooting, coordinated fire, patience drills, shooting while wearing chemical agent masks, and detailed record-keeping.


Attendees must be certified peace officers, federal agents, or active military personnel in good standing with their agency. Attendees must be able to provide valid agency credentials on the first day of class.  Course will entail some physical activity so students should be in above-average physical condition.

Required equipment

All normal tactical clothing/call-out gear, a scoped rifle (bolt-action or semi-automatic) capable of shooting a one inch or better group at 100 yards, sling, shooting mat, backpack, log book/notebook, cleaning kit, 500 rounds of match grade ammunition, and a chemical agent mask.  A Ghille suit is recommended but not required. At the least camouflage clothing such as multi-cam will be sufficient.  Please be prepared for all-weather training. Sunscreen, hydration, head covers (caps, boonies, shemaghs) are highly recommended. Spotting scopes, range finders, and night optic devices are optional.

Payment and Hotel information

The fee for the course is $450.  Registration must be completed on line.  Payments should be made out to the TTPOA. Credit card payments are strongly recommended however check payments can be sent to: Ken Law 2300 Scenic Dr. El Paso, TX 79930.  Inquiries regarding the course, payment, transportation, and lodging options can be directed to Lawkm@elpasotexas.gov or 915-637-6338. All fees are due by April 22.  Refunds for cancellations will not be made after that date.
