This class will be a basic, yet comprehensive certification course (certification through TTPOA) for those personnel assigned or desiring to be assigned as a Tactical Medical Support element for a SWAT/Tactical Team. **Class will start promptly at 0700 on Thursday of the week the class starts**


Course Topics:

  • History & Development of Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS); The general history, development and operation of modern SWAT units; The general operational philosophy/model of armed vs. unarmed SWAT medics

  • Ethical/Legal issues related to SWAT and TEMS; Funding and interagency cooperation of TEMS Units

  • SWAT Operations/tactics and intervention strategies; High-Threat Extraction in the tactical environment, 2019-TCCCCertification. ($15.00 for card)

  • Weapons familiarization/make safe issues; Medical Threat Assessment; Medicine Across the Barricade

  • Patient assessment in austere environments; Advanced Airway management; Operational planning along with extended operations mitigation; Chemical Agents/Less than lethal devices overview and treatment modalities

  • TEMS units equipment carry considerations; Team health/team sustainment issues; Advanced trauma management and other TEMS pertinent subjects



Nationally registered or state certified EMT-B or higher.  Preference will be given to students who are already, or soon will be assigned to an existing SWAT/Tactical Team.  Current EMS certification and agency I.D. must be provided.  **Other EMS/Non-medical providers may be given consideration by special permission.  Please contact Brian Lankford for special considerations. 

**Although there is no P.T. Test to gain entry into the class, it will be physically demanding at times.            Students should be at a level of physical fitness that would be expected of a SWAT          Officer/Tactical Medic working in a TEMS environment.

**There will be a TTPOA medical/injury liability release waiver*

**Students will, as part of the class be exposed to CS gas in a supervised environment (mandatory).


Required Equipment:

  • Basic SWAT uniform to include: BDU Pants (or EMS pants) 2-3pair, T-shirts/BDU top 2-4 pr, plenty of socks/underwear,  Eye Pro(glasses/goggles),EarProtection

  • Camelback or similar hydration systems; Gloves, Knee/Elbow Pads; Flash light/Head Lamp (preferably with red lens option)

  • Any current issued medical Equipment/Gear (Lg. Med bags, kits etc for interactive session)

  • SWAT style ballistic (heavy) vest or load –bearing vest; functionalgas mask! Students will need to bring a large trash bag for clothes that have become contaminated during CS Gas exposure. 

  • Be prepared for hot/humid weather. (Beanie style hat, reliable rain gear, gloves,  The class will continue regardless of the weather conditions. Be sure, watch the weather forecast, and pack/plan accordingly. 

  • Good running shoes and PT gear for those highly motivated individuals who attend this course!


  • NO WEAPONS (including edged weapons of any type) OR AMMUNITION WILL BE NEEDED OR ALLOWED.

The fee for the course is $800.00 for TTPOA members and $800.00 for non-members.
